hurricane buster

1 1/2 oz Gold Puerto Rican Rum (Don Q Gold)
3/4 oz Calvados or Applejack (Laird's)
1/2 oz Curaçao (Pierre Ferrand Dry)
3 oz Guava Juice
3/4 oz Lime Juice

Shake with ice and strain into a Squall (half-sized Hurricane) glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with a sugar cane stick, cherry, and orange and lime slices.
Two Wednesdays ago, I decided to beat the heat with a Tiki drink, so I grabbed for Beachbum Berry's Potions of the Caribbean. There, I found the Hurricane Buster created by Joe Scialom of the Caribe Hotel in 1957; he later served this at the Habana Hilton as the Machete. Joe is best known for creating the Suffering Bastard, and I have also written about his Sol y Sombra. Here, the Hurricane Buster offered a mint, floral, and fruity bouquet. Next, lime and guava on the sip transitioned into rum, tropical, and orange flavors on the swallow.
